Prioritization in everyday doctoral and postdoctoral life: A reflection framework
Good prioritization is more than just time management. This reflection paper distinguishes between three levels at which priority decisions are made: pragmatic (tasks, resources), social (expectations, sanctions) and strategic (career, timing). Many conflicts arise because we do not recognize the level at which we are currently making decisions – or which level makes us feel guilty.
The paper offers a framework for reflecting on one’s own priority patterns, not motivational rhetoric. Includes: a three-level model with concrete examples from everyday research, reflection questions for self-evaluation and discussions with supervisors, as well as a curated list of scientific literature on structural working conditions, gender dynamics and precarious academic work.
For doctoral students, postdocs and anyone who wants to understand why ‘just prioritizing better’ often doesn’t work.
